I agree with Teresa's expanded version of "joy" as it relates to old quilts, books, and family treasures. As I age I look at things differently, too, but the gift to our guild of 40 BOXES of a quilter's fabric and books by the daughter of an Alzheimer's patient was a wake-up call to save our daughters from having to deal with so much saved stuff.

I get a lot of scraps donated to me. I used to keep it all. Now I have given myself permission to throw away really cheap fabric and put on the guild free table anything that stops me in my tracks when I go through my stash. I find that these fabrics are creativity killers. I used to think - I need to make a quilt with all this ugly fabric. My son asked why I would use fabric that I didn't like? So I took it to a guild meeting and the ugliest one was the first that was snatched up! So - better to share with others - you never know what will spark creativity in someone else.

Marie Kondo is fine for your closet, but not for everything. Her technique is fine for folding fabric, but we are so different and that must be respected. She seemed to have oversimplified life, but some of us need more in life than organizing. And I will never bother to thank an inanimate object before tossing it out! Great article! Thanks for sharing.
