This has become the online equivalent of telemarketing calls. It’s in every industry. I first noticed it with a photo of a hand knitted coat selling at a ridiculously low price. Most of these come from China. The only way to stop it is put pressure on those who sell the ad space and the government to stop spam advertising and spam telemarketing on the internet. Contacting the “seller” is useless. They simply change their name and hide.

I point out these scammers regularly to our Newsletter subscribers, as well as to anyone who posts any other knockoffs on Facebook. (You know the ones where they compile a bunch of artists' record covers, or more recently have seen embroidery designs being repurposed - dragonflies, unicorns, etc.) Tell tale sign is going to the site and seeing the EXACT same photo over and over again - just a different "quilt" Photoshopped in. Or seeing pressure sales tactics such as limited quantity, only x number left or a timer countdown (all of which magically reset if you revisit the site later or go to the site in a different browser. I try to report them to the web hosting company to shut them down, but they will just show up again under a different name/URL.

There are several such 'phishing' (aka scam) sites on FB. I saw a quilt I recognized; I wanted to report it as copyright infringement, but FB wouldn't let me because I wasn't the designer. So I searched out the designer, sending her a private message on FB that she needed to know and deal with this. That one disappeared eventually but more have reappeared -- especially for this gift giving season. Ignorant, innocent viewers comment on the beauty of the pieces. I however comment "SCAM!!" and explain why. It's the best I can do for the moment. I intend to harass them by calling them out every time I can.

I left Facebook a couple of years ago because of things just like this. I decided that it was going to take people leaving the site - like a grassroots effort, to cause change in a huge social media platform like Facebook. It has been harder keeping up with all of the quilters, quilt shows, and all of the greater quilt worldsince then. I spend time each week reading through my list of quilters' blogs and websites, etc. to keep updated. Although I can't get news of things in "real time" like we could with Facebook I still believe I've done the right thing by taking the action that I can take as an individual not supporting Facebook.

This happened about a year ago with some of my designs I created for Story Quilts; I found out when a friend on Facebook pointed me to a website selling a 'quilt' which was a (poor) photographic reproduction of my quilt. The offending company claimed to be in Australia but my son discovered their business registry was in Tokyo Japan. The company kept changing their business name to keep ahead of angry designers and finally disappeared altogether when Google banned their site and a search by name took you instead to the BBB who gave them an 'F' rating. I'm so sorry to hear they (or another entity) are back at it again. I checked their website and haven't found any of my designs (so far) but I strongly recommend all quilters to check and see if your designs have been stolen whether you are a professional designer or not

I ordered the king-size Hippie quilt in late November and paid through PayPal. When I found out this was a rip-off, I filed and subsequently escalated a dispute. The “seller” (Printabel) responded to PayPal’s inquiry, asking for patience and saying that it takes time to piece together such a fine product. They also provided, through PayPal, a DHL eCommerce tracking number. I entered the tracking number on the DHL eCommerce website. It says the package was scanned in Shanghai, China on December 27. It also says it weighs 500g (1.1 lb). How can a king-size quilt weigh just a little over a pound?! Will continue to follow through with PayPal and hope I get my money back.

I was so excited to be getting this for someone very special who just graduated nursing school and is working in the job she loves and loves nursing so much. She would have loved the nursing quilt I had ordered for her bed. It was going to be a Christmas present from her father and I. But, I did take action and called Pay Pal at the number from my bank statement and spoke with a nice girl by the name Ginger. She has opened up an active complaint and giving this so called company to prove that they have sent it to me or that this is ligit. They have 10 days if they do not hear anything they will refund me the money back and fill a complaint with them and shut down their account. I told her with all of you on here saying that you were scammed that made a report with Pay Pal about this they should have done that by now. I hope they get shut down an fast!
I too, got scammed and am trying to get my money back via Paypal. In case no one has mentioned or already discovered this, everyday when I would click on USPS' tracking # Emacotton provided to see if there was anything new on my package, the DHL and USPS tracking was just dead stopped at Dec 6! I placed my order on Nov 15. I then went directly to DHL and USPS' website to enter Emacotton's tracking #'s there and both tracking #'s came up as INVALID! Emacotton likely just made them up! I also no longer trust Facebook! Buyer beware - no kidding!

I had the same thing happen with some of my Story Quilts patterns. In our case it turned out to be a company registered in Japan but claiming to be a small wool farm in Australia (we found they had stolen that identity too. It is very hard and expensive to pursue legal action against a foreign company overseas, especially when that company keeps changing their business name (three times so far in our case). They put the product up for a few days and then remove it. Story Quilts and a number of others whose work was stolen did file a complaint with Shopify who was the 'hosting' the shopping cart for this business but I'm not sure if that has really helped. Watermarking your photos won't help as if your quilt is pictured anywhere - promotion for a show or just photographed by a viewer at a show and posted on Social Media, they can lift that photo from any source they find. They don't care about the quality of the photo either.

My son found out who the site owners are and rang them, asked them to take down the image as it was stressing his already very sick mother (I'm not, I'm fine) anyway they did!! I also contacted another artist who's image was on there too (famous NY painter) whom then got her legal team onto it and the site was shut down in 4 days or less. The problem is they'll pop up again under another name, another website. Just terrible

You can check out her web site at photoattorney.c om. Although we are talking quilts here, the copyright infringement considerations are very similar.
This would be difficult to prove since so many quilts have center medallions. They look similar but there are some major design elements that are totally different. I would just forget it as legal action is expensive and may not yield a favorable outcome for the plaintiff. As far as the same name, that could be a total accident since the person creating the name does not normally check copyright information. I have seen many quilts at shows with the same name and the quilts are all different.

I am so sorry to see this. I have indeed seen this before with quilt patterns, wood building patterns, just about anything. It is incredibly horrible and I am sad that we live in a time now that people have no shame or accountability to a higher power.

I’m sorry that happened to you. I was going to say there is no way anyone honest could make them and sell them so cheap. Hope you are able to find the source quickly. I’ve had my “ideas” taken before. And it’s painful to say the least . Will spread the word.

Thanks to my friend Alice Smrka for her posting that called my attention to this. I then alerted Ricky. This is a serious scam, folks. Please, please, please help us getting facebook to pull all of their ads down. There are more than 50 of them on Facebook, and thousands have shared it to their pages. These scammers are really pulling in people who don't understand that quilts cannot be made for $50!

My brother and partner are artists. They, too, have had issues with major corporations stealing and using their designs and art. China, in fact, publishes their books with no compunction. They are small business and often do not have the resources to fight this blatant copying. Good Luck, once your design is public, they have been told it is fair game for copying. It should not be like this,

the fact they are calling this a blanket and not a quilt tells you its' a scam plus is it the quilt they are selling for 60 bucks ? the fabric alone would be twice that! problem is a lot of people wouldn't know that aren't quilters, since it's facebook you can report them
