Some people like piecing / patchwork, and there are MANY ways to do that. Others focus on quilting (by hand, long arm or domestic machine). Some of us start out as piecers and later add applique (also MANY ways to do that, too!). When I started using fusible web for applique, it sparked my creativity as I came up with other ways to use it. That led to experimenting with other 'artsy' things as well. The result is, I don't make bed quilts. I make quilts that look like a picture you hang on the wall (ie. Art quilts). I admit that I have never sewn 'found items' on my quilts, but my interests have changed and progressed so much since I became a quiltmaker that I have learned to never say never. Most of all, I certainly do NOT begrudge other people the right to enjoy creating whatever (and however) they want. Blessings to all.

Can't we all just get along :-) :-) :-) ? Here is the definition of the word 'quilt,' according to Wikipedia: A quilt is a multi-layered textile, traditionally composed of three layers of fiber: a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding, and a woven back, combined using the technique of quilting, the process of sewing the three layers together.

#4seasaw - Agree with you pretty much ..and nicely said! #3Sharon - Is it really necessary to be nasty about it? #2D 'trash' not really necessary..... #1leafy - good point!
I respectfully disagree with comments 1 and 2. I think that the quilt world is evolving. I think that there is room enough for both traditional and art quilts in this world. I am an art quilter and when people ask me what that means I tell them that my quilts don't warm your body... they warm your soul.

Whoops! Sounds like the stern-faced Quilt Police are offended by someone having fun! Alas, there are a lot of people who are scared to color outside the lines, and because they can't have the fun, they want to outlaw it for everyone -- too bad, lots of us love to color any way we want to -- and can use any fabric, item, bits, this or that on anything we make -- it's ours, we paid for it, we can do what we please with it! Lighten up, Quilt Police, this is SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!!!!!!! hugs on ya, Quilt Show, thanks for the fun ideas!

I agree with the previous post. Just because you use a long arm or a sewing machine to do something to it shouldn't automatically make it a quilt. Seems like anything will be considered a "quilt" if it is a sandwich of two pieces of fabric and batting, regardless of how un-quilt like the rest of it is. Just gathering a bunch of trash laying around your house and putting it on a piece of fabric shouldn't be considered "quilting", regardless of how pretty it might be. It's fabric art, (with some candy wrappers? seriously?) , tossed in for good measure.

Why the necessity to call these mixed-media, collage-art pieces "quilts"? Surely they fall better into the category of fabric art...modern art...something ... The traditional meaning of the name "quilt" is being lost.
