I started doing the same thing when I realized that I hated changing from my walking foot when the quilt was quilted, to my ordinary foot in order to make the binding, then back to my walking foot to attach the binding. That was when I had a cheap old sewing machine that was awkward for changing presser feet. Now I have my lovely Bernina, and it's a snap to change feet - but it's lovely to have the binding ready to go when the quilting is done.

Good idea, but push yourself over the finish line and bind that quilt you've put your heart and soul into the NEXT week after finishing. I find it to be a time to pause and reflect on the journey that went into the quilt's evolution. Set out a long card table right next to where your computer or T.V. is. Short 10-15 minute intervals add up quickly to a finished quilt.

As soon as the top is done - even if I don't know when/if it'll ever get quilted, I make the binding ! Depending on the size of the project, it all goes on a hanger or into one of those zipper bags - you know, the ones that have curtains, sheets or other items in them! I save those from any source I can as they make GREAT project bags!

I find myself even preparing my binding (always make continuous bias binding) as a distraction for heavily-pieced quilt tops.
Having the binding already prepared when quilting is done, or returned from your long arm quilter, is a great incentive to go ahead and finish a project. I keep my prepared binding--or at least enough of the fabric I will use to make it--in a zip lock bag along with a quilt label. I iron a piece of freezer paper to the back of the label and use an archival marker to write all the information on it except the final completion date. I usually make scrappy bindings, including many different fabrics from the quilt top, so collecting up all those bits and pieces as soon as the top is done keeps them from disappearing back into my stash.
