It is interesting how different dyes and methods come about. I'm familiar with cochineal which is used in Mexico and Central America. It was used for the red in British uniforms. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal

Interesting story. I'm obsessed with the color red and red and white quilts are my absolute favorite. Is there a pattern available for the Feathered Star quilt featured in this article? It's gorgeous!

Beautiful color and history of it. Another 'red' I adore is called Cherokee Red. It is the red used by Frank Lloyd Wright in some of his houses, particularly Fallingwater, a house built on a waterfall in Southwestern Pennsylvania which is where I am from. Worth visiting if you haven't all ready.

Gosh, Lilo, that is really interesting! Sheep dung no less. There is a kind of humor in that the only color fabric I ALWAYS pre-wash is red. I am not advocating that manufacturers add that, but maybe it was the "secret" ingredient that prevented fading. No I am not volunteering to try it. I'll continue to pre-wash.
