I started my great granddaughters at that age. My six year old made a dolly blanket and hoped for a "fancy" ribbon at the fair. She had gotten a blue ribbon for her patchwork pillow she had enter. She went back to the scrap box instead of my stash. She learned new techniques, glue basting, staying on the lines when quilting and did a fantastic job. She did the piecing, the quilting, and binding. I am too nervous to let her use the rotary cutter. Do they make Klutz gloves for children. Yep we had to rip till I told her to stop when she got tired and rest her hands and take a big breath. I heard her say to the machine "lets take a break." She got her fancy ribbon!!

I was so tickled to read about your sewing session with your granddaughter! Mine is 7 and I brought over my Jem gold machine (janome ) for her to practice on. However, I was not able to totally focus on working with her as I was also watching her 3 year old and 1 year old brothers who pulled me away! The 3 year old wanted a turn when she walked away but I couldn't really work with him at that time either. Maybe we will get quality time with each other in the near future. Yes sewing does skip generations!

I started with my oldest GD at the same age as Lev. We did a machine Appliqué pillow with her name. Next year it was a pieced doll quilt. Last summer a pillow case. She asked me at Thanksgiving what was next summer. Three things we did. 1. Put left hand behind back when using iron with right hand. 2. Sewing machine set in lap. 3. Went to store to buy pillow case fabric. Discussed why sparkle fabric was not a good idea and how cotton washed well.

I taught my 7 & 10 year old granddaughters to quilt. They both chose fabrics from Nan's scrap drawers. Pieced their quilts, making 9 patch & flying geese blocks using Nan's "good" sewing machine.
Way to go! I helped my granddy to make a quilt for her Dora Doll at the same age. Since then, she's made a quilted bag and a pencil case. She also made some skirts. She selected fabrics and arrangement and sewed the blocks and sashings and I did the quilting for a quilt we sent to Nepal as aid for earthquake survivors ( age 7 at this stage). Now at 9, she is starting her own bed quilt, selected fabrics and auditioned--she actually used those words--for her blocks. Yay! another quilter is born....

I think Sewing in general skips a generation. I have two daughters and neither one has expressed an interest in Sewing/Quilting , maybe because I can make whatever they want or need. I used to bargain with them: if they wanted something done, I would propose a household chore that I didn't particularly like, vacuuming as an example, and we reached an agreement! I am going to be a first time grandmother next May, so I am looking forward to doing what you are doing someday!

I used to sit beside my great-grandmoth er while she made quilt tops on her treadle. My grandmother didn't quilt or sew and none of her daughters quilted. It skipped 2 generations in our family. I was always fascinated by quilting. I've taught my own 2 kids to use a sewing machine and how to sew by hand, so both can do it, but neither one does unless they really want or need something done. Maybe it's time I ask my 5 year old grandson if he wants to learn. He does love all the quilts I've made for him.

I started my older granddaughter at about the same age with a battery powered machine. She quickly figured out the cable was for electricity and made the machine go faster.
This is so much fun for Alex and her grandaughter. Mine got very ambitious and wanted to make a teddy which she saw in a magazine.I was dubious as she is only just turned 6. So she had the pick of my stash to choose fabrics and I helped her to draw round some cardboard templates before cutting out the pieces. It was very much a joint effort but she was involved in the process and enjoyed it. I have done projects with her two big brothers. I love the sense of achievement they have when they finish a project

Love love love this!! I love quilting and I'm 61. I learned on an old treadle machine with my bubba. I was too little to reach the treadle, ( like your granddaughter) so I sat on her lap. I couldn't wait to get old enough to "pedal" the machine by myself. The rest is history. The old machine, and the pillowcases with straight seams, and my bubba, taught me to love sewing. I recently bought a new bernina 790. If bubba was still around, she would be totally amazed!!!!

I love it, Alex. I met you a number of years ago at the presentation in Glens Falls, NY. I think your son was soon getting married. This bubby only has grandsons, but the oldest, who was 9 at the time, was with me because he was sick, and he wanted to learn to quilt. He made a 9-patch from charm squares, and then we did the same as you for his little doggie that he slept with, He used to sit on my lap at 2 years old and press the needle up and needle down when I needed it. Another grandson has been after me for a while to show him He presses fabric for me.

My 2 year old boy sits on the edge of my seat when I'm sewing! I have to store my machine in the needle down position because he's so interested he can't help himself. I show him how it's dangerous to get fingers too close to the needle, and sometimes if I get mine too close he pulls them back- so sweet! When I pull out fabric he wraps it around himself & pulls it to him. Lately he's been claiming it as "mine". A true fabric lover!

I've loved this! It brought back memories of sewing with my youngest granddaughter years ago. We made a cute Santa decoration. Madelyn's favorite part was using the button foot and being able to press the peddle herself to sew on a row of tiny button decorations. It's nice that the Bernina auto stops so she couldn't go wrong. To this day the decoration hangs in a special place at Christmas. And yes, it skipped a generation in our family too!

Sweet story, Alex! (I wish *I* had some grandchildren.. .) I remember many years ago, I had to entertain my ex-husband's new wife's two boys for a day. I decided they could each make a quilt. We went through a similar process (without the jumpy house, however). One of the boys confided to me, "I'm a little concerned about the rotary cutter." The other was vastly relieved to hear that "lots of men make quilts!" Fun!

That is wonderful! When my granddaughter was 3 years old she loved to go in my scrap bin, pull out her favorites and glue the pieces on paper. She designed away! She always loved that scrap bin. Now she's in high school, taking a break from sewing with all those activities (!) but I know she's be back to her sewing machine eventually. Those are precious moments, enjoy them!!
