My cutting table began as a kitchen table with fold-over top which doubled the available space. It was too low, so a carpenter friend changed legs to 36in porch spindles, which are very stable (as opposed to leg risers) and perfect height for me.
My cutting table started life as a kitchen table with folding top; the fold-out doubled the available space. It was too low for a good cutting surface, of course. A carpenter friend replaced the original legs with 36in tall porch railings, which are very stable and the perfect height for me.
I just read #16s comment about receiving one of your Dad’s quilting frames. I was fortunate enough to meet your Mom and Dad at their home in Livermore when I was looking for a quilting frame. Your Dad sold me the frame he used at shows he went to with you. I was happier with the “used” frame because of its history! Wish I had the space for it to remain set up.

I love your new sewing space/studio. It 's beautiful and looks very efficient. Love the comfort space with reading light. Thanks so much for sharing. Always love new ideas, even if I can't do them. My sewing room is 10x10, with no cabinets. I have way to much 'stuff' in it. I cut and plan in my dining room, which is okay, as it is right next my sewing room. Thanks for sharing.

Is there any way you could post a picture of the other half of your studio? I'm curious about the design wall. It was a banner day for me when I was able to change a small bedroom into a studio. The transformation was not taken seriously until I removed the bed...Which I think might have been advice I heard Alex give on the Quilt Show!

Carol Taylor has a dream studio, with a great storage closet that doubles as extended design walls. With info from her, I adapted a hole in the dark basement into a nearly-dream studio (ground floor with windows with a view would achieve perfection). I blogged about the closet doors/design walls here, and several friends have copied me and are happy. http://www.sarahannsmith.com/weblog/?p=6000 The other thing I'd suggest is to think in zones (like kitchen planning): Cutting, ironing, thread and sewing machines, sit-and-think-s pace. Then put your storage for those things near where you DO them. All paint on ONE place. All thread in ONE place. No more hunting!

I love your studio. it looks like an inviting place to relax and create to your heart's desire.
This sound like it could have been written by me. We expanded a main floor bedroom over double the size of the original room. An entire wall of cabinets with shelving of various heights was one of my major wants. A huge window, which overlooks a pond and fields, was a must. Many outlets were installed, even one inside the closet and of course lighting in the closet. There is a corner for my great granddaughter's little sewing area. A computer cabinet, TV and glider chair--OH and a huge comforter on the floor for the puppies, complete MY SPACE. This is my comfort zone and I thank my husband every day for letting me go through with this idea.
