I have my set up in a U with iron area on left looking out a window, my sewing desk in the bottom of the U looking out another window and the right side is my smaller cutting desk. I know everyone tells you to do a lot of walking between these items but I never seem to have enough time to sew so I prefer to make it convenient when I do. I just have to ask why do we set rules for 'being good' and exercising while we sew? I exercise at other times of the day and when I quilt, I quilt and have a great time! I saw the quilt police and 'he' is us! Thanks for the other suggestions and I agree that I do not like to face a wall when I'm sewing! Don't forget to design happiness and joy into your sewing area! It's YOUR play area! Piece!! Hugs, Deb in NC

Lots of good ideas here. I keep hoping my 30 something finds a permanent place and finally moves out furniture still stashed in the corner. Then I might finally have enough storage. (And no, antique furniture doesn't make for easy storage)

Oh, to have a room large enough to do this with! My sewing room is packed with supplies lining the walls utilizing those chrome shelving units, my computer desk in one corner and a Handiquilter Avante runs down the center of the room, with a shortened 8' table. My sewing machine is now in a furniture grade cabinet and sits in the bay (4 windows) of my dining room (lovely), much of my cutting is done on the dining room table, and my ironing is done in the kitchen (about 12 steps from my sewing station). It's all we can do and I'm grateful for what I have. I figure, the extra steps I put on going from sewing machine to iron may slow me down, but gives me a little exercise! :D

Another option for better bone and muscle health is putting risers under the sewing table legs so you can stand to use the machines. And I also put my pressing area on the other side of the room so that I have to walk all the way around my big table (combined cutting and sewing) to get to it. It's really not about efficiency of time, but of quality of health.

I love my dream room! I have big windows where I can see the beautiful mountains around me. I have a long arm machine. And 12 foot table. The doorway is quite large and is open to our office. My sewing table is more toward the center and faces the door. I also do not like to face a wall. I do have a design wall across in front of me. I also have a futon and a TV in the room. This room also serves as my husband's den. One wall is enclosed shelves. I also have a bookcase. I have a lot of storage area. I feel that it is quite organized. Just makes me happy to be in that room!

I agree with Robin. I like having to get up and walk to iron or cut. Sort of keeps me moving when I'm spending most of the day sitting and sewing. I have my sewing table in the center of the room, design wall directly in front of me. My ironing board is to the right and my cutting table is to the left in a bay window. This gives me plenty of light while I cut.

When I set up my sewing room, I had a variety of options and I understand the value of efficiency.
