I just installed an integrated LED ceiling fixture in my 12x12 room, and love it. 1600 lumens, 4,000k is perfect for me. My machines have the good LEDs on them and I also recommend an inexpensive floor light with 5 adjustable arms. I've placed LEDs in that one, and everything is so clear now! I had halogen undercabinets before and don't even need them now.

I agree with the other commenters on the fantastic functionality of fluorescent lighting. I sew in a converted 12 x 12 foot bedroom. We installed 4, 4 foot 2 tube full spectrum fluorescent fixtures and there are no shadows anywhere. We used utilitarian surface mounted wiring (covered by a tiny rectangular box-like cover) so that when we someday sell our house, the fixtures and wiring will be easy o remove with minimal damage to ceiling and walls.

Why no mention of fluorescent lighting? It gives the brightest, most even light available. I have 20 four-foot full-spectrum fluorescent tubes in my studio, and tbey provide beautiful light with accurate colours. Disappointed this articke doesn't mention either fluorescent or full-spectrum lighting.

My progressive prescription lenses still were not working for threading my needles . However, Walmart had several choices of glasses for close up work and a 2 1/2X lens solved my needle threading problem. Just bring along a needle and thread when you choose the glasses that work best for you

Great article, we have gone to LED lights, although expensive, really make for a brighter room and save on electricity. But, I hope to some day soon add them to my ceiling in my sewing room. Thanks, really great article and very creative studios.

I too removed cool looking overhead lighting in favor of banks of florescent lights opting for function over style. My studio has a small east-facing skylight, and one north facing window. In addition to the overhead lights, I had a forest of lamps everywhere, but it was still dark. I went to an industrial lighting specialist with a drawing of my 12'x24' studio. For less than $300 i came home with six 4-foot light banks that have two tubes each of daylight spectrum tubes and a diagram of where to install them. So now twelve 4-foot tubes shine down on my studio. Wow...no shadows, no dark spots. I live in the Pacific Northwest. In the winter, I think my studio is the brightest place north of Mexico.

Nancy Birger These options are all beautiful, but if you really want to see, fluorescent lighting does the trick. I took out the pretty track lighting that gave me spots of light and dark areas. I replaced it with the large fluorescent box lights and I can see so much better.
