I had a quilt in the Primitives display last year in Houston and will have one in the Texas Guilds' Award Winning Traditional Quilts in Houston this year. I was so scared when I first began to enter my quilts, but have benefited from the comments made by the judges. It is a humbling experience to have a quilt selected and I will continue to enter my quilts knowing that I may not always have an accepted entry. I no longer fear the challenge.

Another piece of advice for entering quilts is to have it finished BEFORE you even submit the application. The first quilt competition I entered accepted a photo of my quilt top. You should also know that I'm a free-lance symphony musician. In the time before the actual show, I had all the time in the world to quilt my show piece... and then I got hired to do a bunch of shows. I never actually finished the quilt. I got about 4 hours sleep a night for the month before the show. Submitted it hours before the deadline. So now I must have finished the quilt before I even fill out an application!

I always encourage my students and friends to enter quilts just because it is fun. Winning a ribbon is a bonus, for sure, but you've got to love what you are doing for it to be worth your time. I once did a quilt with huge big snowflakes on it...the kind that only comes during sugar season. When I entered it into a show, the Texas judge decided that I didn't have enough snowflakes on it. Oh well, I sent it to Edinburgh, Scotland and came home with the Viewer's Choice...my favorite of all ribbons. Just do it and don't take yourself too seriously.
