I organize my fabric by manufacturer and/or designer; and sometimes theme if I have enough of one. I have a bin or two for Moda Bistro and Moda Java, a bin for all my Tula Pink fabric, a bin for the entire Moda Figgy Pudding by Basic Grey line, one for all my cupcake fabric, a couple for all of my Robert Kaufman fabric, and on and on. Does anyone else do this?

Tone on tones and solids are separated using Joen Wolfrom's 3 in 1 Color Tool. It has really helped me understand tints, shades and tones. Fat quarters go in open top plastic tubs. (I have greeting cards sticking out of the end of the boxes in matching colors-fun!) and matching larger pieces are folded and placed adjacent to the boxes. Multi color fabrics have been sorted into 6 Ikea wire sliding bins by value (Grace Errea). I initialing used my camera (use your I phone picture screen set to black/white) to sort everything into light, medium light, etc. It works for me! And it makes it easier to put fabrics back where they belong if I don't use them. Next phase -deli counter plastic boxes to sort scraps by color. (Superbowl, here I come!) They will then go with the bigger pieces of similar color.

My stash is huge compared to the ones in the pictures. I am sorting through mine and rolling them up with a paper taped around the middle. Like remnants at the store. I have 10 wire shelving racks from Sam's 4 feet wide and 18 inches deep on wheels in a 12 x 12 room. Also have crafting supplies in there. Closet is full too. The other room, 12 x 12, has a 4 x 8 piece of plywood covered in clear plastic as a sewing table/cutting table/ pressing table. Bookshelves across one wall for sewing books and cookbooks. My 'stuff' has been in storage so this is the first time I have really gone through it and organized it. I never imagined what hard work this would be. I am a very organized person so getting this done is imperative! Good thing I live alone, my living room is buried in fabric.

It helped me to evaluate the size of fabrics I generally use - I bundled up 3 bags of bits and pieces and donated to a local special needs school for art projects. I have always sorted the stash by color, but this time I presorted all dots, stripes, paisleys, novelties, silks, flannels, wools and gave them each their own bins, then proceeded to sort the rest into color bins. It's already paying off! Also took time to label everything! That's helping a lot, too. Thanks for all the ideas!

After working monochromatical ly for a year with small bits, sheers, cottons and more I worked out a system that is good for me. I put together the stackable interlocking plastic coated wire boxes so I can easily see my fabric and allow it to breathe. I have enough space in the studio to include 13 basic colors of the color wheel, blacks, whites, greys. Within each box I have one color. Large pieces more than 1 yard are folded and go on the bottom left, 1/2 yd and fat quarters go on top on the left. A shoebox or plastic bin from my grocery store greens container is bits and pieces, yarns, embellishments and small pieces of anything in that color. I have a separate gallon bag with folded sheers on top of the shoebox. It is easy when I get more fabric to add to the color it is. Anything with mixed colors, novelty fabrics, etc. goes into a separate box.

Looking at the photo of Susan Carlson's sewing room, you can see that she has placed the fabric shelving on a wall that does not face the window, where the sun would eventually fade the exposed fabric. I see a good usage for my large tropical fabric pieces - a new window shade!

I have gotten into the habit of trimming scraps as I work on or finish a project. I still do have some odd shaped pieces in my color sorted boxes (them are going into crazy quilts, if i ever get to it). I hate to throw away anything, I have pieces sorted at 1/4 " intervals (This is not practical or really useful, though I have a plan to use these, too). Stick to the more common sizes. I am working on a scrap quilt now that uses all 2.5 inch pieces at 2.5 sq., 4.5 " and 6.5 ". I started with the 2.5 '' bag and used the squares I have cut and strips that make multiple sq. or the right size strips without much waste. The rest will go into another scrappy quilt or be added to the crazy quilt. I started on the bags with 4.5 " and 5 " pieces last night and am cutting them down to the sizes I need. Long strips 5 " wide are very handy as I can cut any of the sizes from these. In the future I will probably try to avoid the odd sizes.

My stash is tiny compared to these artisans, but I also had the hidden treasures and trash in bins. Just before Christmas, I purchased a huge bookcase from a music store. It's almost as tall as my sewing room ceiling, and the whole thing is subdivided into boxes for sheet music. Now, each box holds a different color of fabric. It was immediately obvious that 1) I must really hate red, because there were only 3 pieces. 2) I love blue too much; it takes up 3 spaces, and 3) there is not a single stripe in the whole case!

I sort by size, but cut anything smaller than a fat quarter or fat eighth down into common precut sizes, so that I am then able to create my own "layer cake" or "charm pack" (etc...) out of my stash. These sizes also allow me to use the smallest bit of a fabric needed, rather than cutting into a fat quarter (or larger) every time I need something. I have, then, space for 5" squares, 10" squares, 1.5" strips, 2.5" strips (scrappy binding, anyone?) (or jelly roll), and then fat eighths, fat quarters, "bigger than a fat quarter, smaller than a yard", and yard+. Scraps go into a drawer sorted by "small, medium, large, tiny" and every few months that gets sorted and cut into the appropriate selections listed above. Usually after every 3rd project or so. I don't do much with very small pieces, so have recently given myself permission to throw them away.

I recently moved house so I had to get my stash sorted. My fabric is stored in see-through plastic boxes labelled with:-Large pieces, quilt backs, quilt packs (fabric that goes together with a pattern if I've thought of one) in large ziplock bags, smaller pieces folded up like fat 1/4's and stacked on their edges so that I can easily see what is in the box. I try and sort according to colour. Threads are sorted into clear plastic boxes:- embroidery, cotton, cotton and polyester. Ribbons, bias binding, lace etc.all in clear boxes and labelled. Scraps of fabric are sorted according to colour and size. Left over bindings are rolled up and stored in ziplock bags. Scraps of wadding are stored according to type. I like to be able to easily see what I have, stored preferably in one room, but given that I moved more than 60 boxes of fabric, that hasn't been possible. UFO's have their own boxes, but I try not to have more than 1 hand project and 1 machine project on the go at once.
